More Hair, More Confidence

I saw a commercial for hair regrowth for men suffering from baldness and one of the men said, "more hair, more confidence!"

I object. I have a big problem with this. My hair is awesome but it certainly isn't the source of my confidence. My confidence comes from within. I don't want my confidence to be contingent on some exterior thing.

Which is why I have decided to shave my head.

Just kidding, I'm not going to do that but I totally want to. I'm too wussy though. Or maybe I lack the confidence? This post just got transcendental.

It's hard for women to comprehend the link between hair and confidence, since relatively few women lose theirs. Men all have a little Samson mentality, even if we don't admit it.

Wouldn't you guess that thinning hair is a much more serious concern for women than for men? Even for women who have their hair, losing it must be a scary idea. I don't think our society has any allowance for women to just have thin hair or shave their heads, neither of which expectations apply to men. Women are practically required to venture into hats and hairpieces, or muster a huge amount of social confidence and a willingness to do a lot of explaining...

Am I making any sense?

Anonymous, I totally agree. My mom and now sister both have thinning hair (and I think I'm on my way down that road too). It is sad, but society really has no tolerance for women with thin hair. I think this same problem applies to hair color as well. My father has a beautiful head of gray hair, and he gets compliments on it! On the other hand, my mom spends hundreds of dollars to color and highlight hers in order to cover the gray. Why is society's hair standard so gender driven?

Take care with those gender generalizations, Joel. Perhaps hair loss is more prevalent among men but I can still imagine it and yeah, it would suck. I would hate it. And as stated, we all have our things, male and female. As far as making generalizations though, I wonder how many men realize that women are much more attracted to confidence than to hair.

(p.s. this post was totally meant to be silly but I like this discussion. Too bad more males don't read/comment on the blog. :) )

Okay, it looks like I need to explain my comment. While women certainly do lose their hair (it looks like it happens to about half as many women as men), and it is almost certainly more devastating when it occurs to a woman, young women are probably less likely to sit around worrying that in the future they will lose their hair; whereas more men I know have the attitude of "while I still have hair..." That can affect your confidence even before hair loss begins.

I totally agree with that. I haven't worried too much about losing my hair. But there are plenty of other things. Though, I try not to worry too much about things i just can't control. It makes me sad when I see men who, particularly when single, lack confidence and struggle with singlehood because i'm like, man, you could SO get any girl you wanted if you just had confidence, regardless of anything else. But i know that's hard, and perhaps i am getting off track.

jen, my mind is totally blown, i've really come to rely on the pale pink of yesterday's blog. now, i'm sorry if i'm inappropriately commenting when I should be emailing, but this is in reference to an old post. so... the other day I really wanted to look up the ingredient/recipe blog or website you mentioned once, and could. not. find. it. I was really bummed because I had the most random ingredients and needed to quickly find something to make for dinner. could you help me with the info? It really is a beautifully genius idea. thanks.

Hmm. I'm not sure to what you are referring. Is it www.ingredientchallenge.com ? Or is it a website where you plug in the ingredients you have and they make a recipe out of it? Because i have heard of that, and it is cool, but i'm not sure what the address is.

Yeah the change is crazy. Sorry to throw you off. I have big plans for jenslog.com
