Optimist #2

Dear Friends,

Today I realized something. I stood in line at the Target and as I stood there for many, many minutes, I laughed to myself when I saw that the check out girl's price scanner wasn't working and the line came to a halt for a good 10 minutes. As I reflected on this occurrence I pondered how often this seems to happen to me. We all say this, and perhaps it's true, that it is a force of nature or a law of physics that whatever line we get into ends up being the longest, where computer malfunctions or whatever kinds of catastrophe take place. It's a curse.

But then, a realization occurred and it was that it's not that at all. I believe that instead of it being a curse that I end up in these lines again and again and again, it is, in fact, a blessing. A blessing for others. I am an extremely patient person in situations such as this and if someone else were in my place, someone with a short fuse, they might totally lose it and start shouting at the check out person, at others around them, making it even more miserable for everyone. And no one needs that. So if I'm there, I will stand in the line, holding my basket of items. My eyes will glaze over and my spine will tremble, threatening to snap. And I will stand there allowing my mind to wander to never never land, and wait. Because that is just the kind of person I am. My presence will save everyone from an unpleasant alternative. If I can be that blessing for others, well, I would be glad to. So the next time I'm in such a line, instead of wondering why i've been cursed yet again, I will humble myself and remember my purpose. You are welcome.

your saintly public servant,

You're probably also the person who gets the up to 60 "aphids and/or thrips and/or mites per 100 grams" of frozen broccoli that the FDA allows.

Haha, what a way to look at life. I'll think that next time I get stuck with a traffic ticket, "Hey, at least the police need to ticket one less person to reach their quota." Man, I've wasted a lot of frustrated hours with my old ways of thinking!

P.S. Seeing you and Emily tonight totally rekindled my desire (uhhh, just keep reading!) to have a group hang out night. It would be so much fun.
