The Birthday Plate

I am a fan of traditions. When it's late at night and you're talking with someone, it's fun to drone on about things you used to do in yesteryear that seem extra important now, somehow, since they've most likely become unpracticed traditions, turned into a mere memory, and if you don't talk about them, you just might forget. Traditions set us apart, they draw is together, and they're just so fun.

When i was growing up, we had special little birthday traditions for each of the kids. Having so many, one might feel threatened to being forgotten and I think my parents made sure each felt special, at least one day of the year. :)

One of my favorite birthday traditions was the birthday plate. This plate was dark red, glass, and super ornate with bumps and designs and I just thought it was the fanciest thing ever. This was paired with a matching goblet that looked like it was used by royalty in medieval times. The Sunday after or around your birthday, you had your birthday dinner which was comprised of whatever the hey you wanted. I remember one year i requested chicken strips that you buy frozen, jello, and rice-a-roni. Yes, i was high class. My mom was probably like, SWEET! easiest dinner ever. And everyone else was probably hating me. Oh well, it's my dinner! Anyway, so you had the dinner and all the the Sunday place settings were normal except you got the special birthday plate and glass and it was seriously just the best.

I have finally decided to incorporate this tradition into my own small family of me and Sean. It's been far too long but this year we did it. I had to search a bit for the perfect items but I think i found them. And I decided to make it a complete birthday set and found the best set of silverware in existence. Here's the birthday setting:

And here's a closer shot of the silverware. Feast your eyes:

Isn't it great? I mean, this is bound to guarantee happiness on your birthday, because you ate dinner with fish silverware.

And now I ask, what is your favorite birthday tradition? Tell us, and keep it alive.

Love the birthday set. The silverware is awesome. When we become less transient, I'm TOTALLY getting a birthday plate and all the rest of the stuff.

Anyway, I just had to add that another great Scoresby birthday tradition was getting your favorite kind of "sweet" cereal for breakfast. I don't do that so much now, because I'm the only one who eats cereal and I buy the "sweet" stuff whenever I want it, but I think it may be good enough to bring back in a few years.

Love the silverware--perfect for special occasions. Can you send it for me to use on my b-day this year? ;)

How cute! Yes, I'm a fan of your finds. We have a birthday plate as well. It isn't very fancy, but it says 'today is your special day' It is great.

In my family we had the same tradition (but we only had the plate, not the mug). I usually asked for a lasagna, but one year I had Kraft mac and cheese with hot dogs - gotta love it. :0)

Excellent birthday set, that looks awesome! And the fish are just way too cool. BTW, when is your birthday??

I really should go buy a huge set of the fish and have it be our "fancy silverware" and use it at Thanksgiving, etc. Hmm....

My birthday's not for a couple months so this was for Sean whose 30th bday was on Sunday. Holla!

Silverware + fish = silverfish?

When I was a kid, we used to always go to Lagoon for my birthday. That was great. I also used to get sick around my birthday every year, too, until I got my tonsils out. So birthday illness is, fortunately, no longer a tradition.

Fun, happy birthday Sean!! That's excellent that he got to be the first to use the birthday set.
