Pie-tastic

I know many of you out there were curious as to whether or not we won the pie contest at our church activity the other night. Many (or all) of you may have not even known about it but I know, somewhere deep down, you knew it was happening, and you needed to know the results.

Well, to answer your question, NO, we did NOT win. Sean and i have decided that our taste is much too refined for the simple-tongued folk. Our pies were too sophisticated because honestly, we could not have made better pies. They were FANTASTIC. And as much as i want that apron, i definitely felt like we got the recognition we deserved because SO many people came up to us and raved about our pies. "Jen, your guys' pies were my FAVORITE!" And no, i don't mind openly bragging. They were awesome and people should love them. :) And we felt really good about ourselves the way only compliments from others can bring.
Here we are makin' our pies.

Here are the pies:

We made a chocolate peanut mousse pie. The peanuty stuff is so light and creamy. Its contrast with the sweet chocolate crust and the dark dark chocolate was phenomenal. The winner was also a peanut butter pie of some kind but as i recall it was much too sweet for me. If all you taste is sweet, there's no room for anything else, I have learned. But that's fine. I'm not bitter. The second pie we made was KILLER. Blueberry lemon souffle. I love desserts--really good ones-- and i am kind of obsessed with souffles. It's like black magic, trying to get them to come out just right. This was a graham cracker crust with a layer of blueberries and then the lemon stuff on top.

Here's the chocolate/peanut one that gives you a slightly closer look.

I know, right? So somehow, the judging system is flawed. There were at least 20 pies there and at least 5 judges. Maybe it's hard to really get the taste when you're tasting that many pies? Who knows. I'm going to figure it out though. 362 days until the next cookoff.

Impressive! Those both look quite phenominal.

I really REALLY want some bites. I would say, " a bite", but I would definitely want more than one bite of each pie. Yum.

Are you kidding me with that chocolate one?! My jaw dropped just looking at the thing. How could they NOT vote for that. I'm sure the lemon blueberry one was impressive as well, but, come on... that chocolate/peanut butter pie looks like a dream.

I completely would have voted for the lemony one. Forget the apron...it obviously means nothing when they pass over your delicious delights.

The chocolate peanut butter pie looks like you could frame it and put it in a museum. Maybe it was just too intimidating, and the judges felt that the other entrants would harbor resentment against you if you won. So they couldn't let you win, like the way a professional is not allowed to compete in amateur events.

Joel, i like the way you think. yes... yes, i think that's exactly right. :) Also, it will make sean very pleased about it being framed and hung in a museum.. you know, him being an artist and all. (he is responsible for it looking so pretty)

Carolyn, you're my new best friend. :D

thanks everyone..ahhh... i feel a little better about not winning. I won't say that we "lost" because who are the real losers here? the people who don't know good pies, that's who.

Jen, out of the pure goodness of my heart, and in an act of complete selflessness, I offer to taste any pie of your making when I come visit in December. If they happen to be exact replications of the pies in this post, I'll learn to accept it. I know, I know, it's too much you say. But this is what sisters-in-law do for each other--make sacrifices.

you are too kind. Truly, i am humbled by your display of charity & self-sacrifice. how can i repay you? (i can't wait for you to come!!! :D)

actually i barely got a smidgen of a taste of that lemon one so i'd be happy to make it again. the other one is good too but we had buckets of leftover cream stuff and chocolate that we ate out of a tupperware with a spoon. mmm...
